Lavatera ‘Barnsley Baby’

‘Barnsley Baby,’ the bush malva, is very popular because it produces a huge amount of flowers in the garden. At first the flowers are white-pink, but as summer progresses they change to white. It grows to about 70-100 cm tall and prefers a sunny spot with good, nutritious garden soil. This ‘Barnsley Baby’ is very similar to ‘Barnsley’, but is more compact and less tall, with flowers that are a bit whiter. This plant is not very fond of harsh winters, and after such a cold spell you probably won’t see it back in the garden. In its flowering period, Lavatera provides lots of fun and color in the garden.

Care tips

Lavatera ‘Barnsley Baby’ will thank you if you give her some fertilizer regularly. When a cold period arrives, it is best to protect ‘Barnsley’ by covering her, for example with pine branches or a layer of leaves.

As for pruning, at the beginning of winter you can prune the bush back to about 50 cm above the first buds. If you prefer to prune in early spring, you can update the shape of the shrub. Then leave two or three buds at the base of the new shoots. This will give you a more compact shape.
