Alcea rosea ‘Charters’ mix

A particularly beautiful specimen, the hollyhock. This plant, native to the Middle East, is a real powerhouse. It belongs to the Malvaceae family, along with other beautiful plants such as the Hibiscus, Lavatera and cheesy herb (Malva). This plant can grow as tall as 2 meters. The hollyhock blooms in its second year and is a real spectacle then! If you plant it against a fence or wall, it is absolutely perfect. That spot protects it from the wind and gives it the warmth it needs. And just imagine, a hollyhock greeting you at your front door in your gable garden! That’s a cheerful sight.

Care tips

The Hollyhock is a 2-year-old plant, which means it lives for 2 years: in the first year, the plant grows and makes stems, leaves and roots. In winter, the stems and leaves die off.

In the second year, just before new growth begins, you can remove or cut away the old leaves. Then the plant will flower and make seed. After that, the plant dies off completely.

Hollyhocks can spread a lot of seed! If you don’t want them to grow everywhere, you can remove the flowers after they bloom before they make seed.
