Lythrum salicaria

Cattail (Lythrum salicaria) is a tall, upright plant with long spikes full of small pink to purple flowers. It grows primarily in moist to wet places such as banks and pond edges and blooms in summer. This plant is very valuable to nature because it provides a lot of nectar and pollen. As a result, it attracts many bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects and contributes to rich, living vegetation.

Place the plant in a sunny to semi-shade spot in moist to wet soil, such as near a pond or bank. It does not like to dry out, so always keep the soil moist. In dry periods, extra watering is important.

In spring you can remove the old, barren stems to make room for new growth. Otherwise, the plant needs little care and can fend for itself well if placed in the right, moist spot.
