These garden chores you can tackle in October:
The garden may seem past its prime, but October is just the perfect month to tackle all kinds of chores and already look ahead to the next season. So put on those boots and get to work!
Collecting Seeds.
Harvesting seeds is a fun and inexpensive way to enjoy your favorite plants again next year. Once the seeds turn brown and are thoroughly dry, you can collect them. Keep them in paper bags and note the plant name and harvest date.
Perennial sharing (tearing|).
Some perennials grow a little too enthusiastically. Fall is a perfect time to tear them up. Take the plants that are too large out of the ground, divide them and plant the smaller pieces back into the border. You can give the extra plants as gifts to friends or neighbors – success guaranteed!
Plants, plants, plants!
The soil is still nice and warm in October. That makes this the perfect time to set perennials, trees and shrubs. It gives them time to root well before winter, so they can get off to a strong start in spring.
